What's new in Class Chat
Class Chat is a simple, safe messaging app for school communities. It's real-time chat for classmates and classes that works on school WiFi, moderated and ad-free. Here's everything we've shipped so far.
Class admins can now promote another member to admin — or step someone back down — right from the members list. The class creator is always an admin and can't be removed.
Sending is smoother and quicker in long, busy classes, and a failed send now keeps your typed message instead of losing it. We also fixed a case where a new message could briefly hide a classmate's, and deleting a message now clears it everywhere — including from any replies that quoted it.
React, reply, edit, forward and save now stay tucked away until you hover or tap a message — each with a small label so it's clear what it does. Saved messages show a blue bookmark at a glance, and one tap saves or unsaves.
On a touch screen or Chromebook, tap any message to bring up react, reply, save and the rest — no hovering needed. Tap away to tuck them back.
Emoji, GIFs, polls and photos now live under a single + in the message bar, so the composer stays clean and out of your way — matching the iPhone app.
A “New” line now marks where you left off in a busy class, and a scroll-to-latest button — with a count of what you missed — brings you back to the bottom in one tap.
Getting too many pings from one class? Mute its notifications from the chat menu without leaving it — you'll still see messages whenever you open it.
Every message that @-mentions you, gathered in one place across all your classes, so being tagged never slips past you.
Class admins can reach the whole class with @everyone, or just the people online right now with @here.
Admins can switch a class to announcement mode — only admins post and everyone else reads. Great for broadcasts and one-way updates.
Pin several important messages to the top of a class; tap the banner to see them all and jump to any one.
Bookmark any message to your private Saved list and find it again in one place.
Pass a message along to another conversation in a couple of taps.
Start typing, switch chats, and come back — your unfinished message is right where you left it. On iPhone, you can also swipe a message to reply.
GIF search now spreads its load across more capacity, so it keeps working smoothly even when lots of classes are searching at once.
Sent something by mistake? Delete your own message and it's removed for everyone — the chat shows “This message was deleted” in its place. Reported messages are still kept for our safety team to review even after they're deleted, so moderation always has the full picture. Live on the web app now, with the iPhone app to follow.
Type @ and pick a classmate to mention them — their name is highlighted in your message, and they get an @ notification even in a big, busy class. The @ menu works with the keyboard too. Live on the web app now, with the iPhone app to follow.
Tap the reply arrow under any message to answer it directly. Your reply shows a short quote of the original, so everyone knows what you're responding to — tap the quote to jump back to it. Live on the web app now, with the iPhone app to follow.
Tap the smiley under any message to react with 👍, ❤️, 😂, 😮, 😢 or 🎉. Tap your reaction again to take it back, and see how the class is reacting at a glance — counts update live. Reactions are a fixed set, so they stay school-appropriate. Live on the web app now, with the iPhone app to follow.
Switch Class Chat to a dark theme from Settings → Appearance. Choose Light, Dark, or match your device.
Tap GIF in the message bar to search millions of GIFs, powered by GIPHY, and drop one in with a single tap. They play right inline in the conversation.
Collapse the left sidebar down to icons for a wider conversation, and a sender's messages now group together for a cleaner, easier read.
See who's in a class and invite classmates right from the top of any chat — including a scannable QR code for sharing in person.
Drag a photo or file straight into a conversation to send it, no clicking around.
Search a directory of schools in Settings to add yours to your profile.
You can permanently remove your account and all your data any time from Settings.

You can message people at your own school directly. Reaching someone elsewhere takes their full email, which keeps conversations inside your community.
Names and messages are automatically checked so conversations stay school-appropriate.
Start a DM with any school email and we'll let them know a message is waiting, so the conversation is ready the moment they sign up.
Search by name, email, or school ID number when you start a direct message.
Links you share in chat are now clickable, and updating your profile photo is a single tap with a clear “Saved” confirmation.
Class Chat is now a native iPhone app, kept in lockstep with the web app so your chats, classes, and notifications come with you. Rolling out via TestFlight.
